With tire prices increasing almost every other month, it’s more important than ever to take care of your tires. It’s just like maintaining your car, but it’s less costly.

1 Set the air pressure. It’s recommended that you do it monthly. In our part of the country, come winter, I would do it every 2 weeks. We have such a fluctuation of temperature in the winter. That has direct bearing on tire pressure. This also helps get your vehicle better gas mileage.

2 Rotate your tires every other oil change. If you have one of the newer vehicles which allow you to go longer between services, do it every oil change. We do it for free when you buy tires from us. At that time we also set the air pressure. I cannot tell you how many times over the years I had to replace 2 tires early because they weren’t rotated regularly.

3 Balance your tires after they are about half worn. As a tire wears down, the weight distribution can change. Balancing again will re-compensate for the change. Improper balance may cause irregular wear which can lead to road noises and vibrations.

4 Check the alignment annually. Like I said in numbers 2 and 3 irregular wear patterns cause vibrations and road noises. A bad alignment can cause premature wear.

None of these cost a lot to do or have done and it’s good insurance. If nothing else stop buy once and a while and let us check and see how they are wearing.

Did you know the average American owns seven pairs of jeans? And with all the different styles available – skinny, wide-leg, flared – it comes as no surprise. They are easy to dress up, and dress down. But tens of thousands of them are tossed out each year, and most end up in landfills. That’s why it is important to donate your jeans. “The Cotton. From Blue to Green” denim drive turns clothing into insulation. The UltraTouch insulation is then provided to communities in need of housing. Composed of 85 percent recycled cotton fibers, it has better sound absorption, resists mold and mildew and doesn’t contain volatile chemicals. Since the program was started in 2006, they have received over half a million pieces of denim, and have made insulated for more than 1,300 houses.

Personalized Auto Care will be collecting your old, tired, you’ve lost weight, you’ve gained weight and out of style jeans from September 22nd thru October 14th.

Change your oil every 3,000. Just like eating your vegetables and not leaving the house with a wet head, this has been the golden rule of car maintenance for generations. Now, new recommendations are setting new standards and encouraging drivers to break old habits. Jiffy Lube follows car makers lead in breaking the 3,000 mile barrier.

Regular oil changes are a key way to prolong the life of an engine, but automakers have lengthened recommended intervals in recent years, making operating conditions and driving habits part of the equation. With improved engine and oil quality, 3,000 has become the minimum in many cases. In fact, most manufacturers are recommending, five, seven, even 10,000 miles between changes for the average driver in a new car. Lengthening the miles between changes also puts more money in the driver’s pocket and less strain on the environment.

In fact, manufacturers like Honda and General Motors equip many of their vehicles with computers that calculate the remaining life of the vehicle’s oil, based on driving habits and environment, taking any guess work out of the equation.

We, like many other businesses I’m sure, get asked this question a lot.

Well here’s the lowdown. The primary reason we use it for is to send estimates for work on your car. We have found that many people prefer this. Sometimes, we even send a picture, so the customer knows what we are talking about. They can see everything in black and white (alright the pictures are in color).

Another reason is, that I get notified every Monday about automotive recalls that have just been announced. I look through my database and send the information to any customer who’s vehicle is involved. Some people did not but their car new and may NEVER get notified by the manufacturer.

I send followup notes to customers to confirm that they got the 5 Star Service they deserve.

I am trying to “go green” so we try to send invoices to your email so we don’t waste paper.

Yes, I do send out our coupons and specials this way. The cost of advertising, for what you get, is ridiculous. I reach my customers to tell them what is going on with coupons and specials.

I do not sell this information or give it away.

The most you will hear from me is once a month for the specials plus maybe a followup letter if you brought your car in for repairs or tires, to see how we did. Like everybody else, if you don’t like what you see, all you have to do is email me and say stop and I will.

Thanks,
John

Did you ever wonder why they put those tires on your new car that allow you do 150 miles per hour? What the heck, most cars out there can’t even do that. It’s called “Contact Patch”. The contact patch is the area of the tire tread that meets the road surface. Why is that important? In current terms, it’s cellphones and texting and the like. When you have to make a manuever to avoid a collision, the higher speed rated tires have a different sidewall construction which help keep the “patch” to the road. Thus giving you better stability and control of your car. Another example would be on fast hard cornering. So it’s not necessarily you and your abilities, but it could be! Click on the link below from Motor Trend Magazine and the picture will give you a better visualization of what we are talking about

I have been in the tire industry for 37 years. Over the years we tried to instill the importance of checking your air pressure regularly, how it affects tire wear handling and and fuel consumption. Though the industry tried it’s best, it never really caught on. Because of that and the different recalls for tread separations from many manufacturers, the Federal Government stepped in and mandated that all vehicles beginning in model year 2008 be equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, a TPMS MALFUNCTION light that appears on your dashboard. Now I have heard these lights be called “idiot” lights because most people either don’t know what they are or don’t want to know. “Light On” to most is a) irritating and b) costly. I have told you this because I wanted to relate a story from the other night.

I had just pulled into the local gas station to fill up. As I am a people watcher, I started watching this young lady and her Ford Escape. She was already filling when I noticed she was crouched down on the other side of truck. She popped up and look around, like did anybody see that. I continued to watch. She walked to the back and did the same thing. I wondered if she could be checking her air pressure. She then came around to the right front. AHA she was. She had her own gauge (picture me speechless). I know, most of you who know me, find that nearly impossible. As she finished with the last tire, I could not help but comment. I said “Excuse me but I am in the tire business and I have to tell you that am absolutely stunned that you would be checking your air pressure on a cold night like this, let alone checking them at all”. I related a few stories from my history and then she said “Well this little tire light came on and I read the manual and it said to check the pressures. She showed me the gauge and said 3 were here and this one was way down here (real low). How much should I put in?” I explained where the sticker was and how to read read it. I was ready to buy her a tank of gas. I asked if she wanted me to help her and she said “No this is something I need to know how to do.” OMG, I think is the proper thing to type here. I found the one I got through to.
